Unusual love letters ...

To be honest I am used to creative spam already and sometimes the extraordinary translation into German just makes you chuckle, even the English version of the single Russian that is looking for a partner or the next notification of a lottery win at Nigeria is quite entertaining to say the least. But in the last two weeks I noticed a new trend in the “love letters” that find their way to my inbox.

I received two job offers (poker related) and about 20-30 emails from different poker sites that highly value me as a customer despite the fact that I haven’t played on some of them for over a year. Obviously most of them are non US and they are not stupid either and launch promotions left and right after the recent actions taken by the Department of Justice against the big 3 US friendly poker sites (PokerStars, FullTilt and AP/UB).

Their timing could not have been any more perfect, since I just took a break from poker recently and haven’t played for 3 weeks. But now I am fully recharged and gonna deposit 10k and grind 25 hours per day … wait, that might have been sarcastic. Would it also be naïve if I click on the link for the pictures that “Olga” promised me? Or fill out the form and open a bank account for the poor guy at Nigeria that wants to use me to transfer the funds?

When times are getting tougher, it is more and more difficult to laugh … but that doesn’t mean you should take everything serious and if an offer sounds too good to be true, be careful and think twice before you proceed. Yes, I might play more poker again and use the one or the other bonus offer that I received, but I will just pick the one that seems to be worth most given all circumstances. After all, if you are not selective and sign up for stuff because it sounds good, it can fire back in the future and when you look back, it doesn’t appear to be as exclusive anymore.

But I have to admit one thing, whilst “Olga” and the guy from Nigeria have been funny (or the translation program used in this case), the poker sites have done a pretty good job so far with their latest promotions and I am pretty sure that more will follow as well. It doesn’t hurt to take a look, in the very end it will be “give and take” anyways.

Just be careful and don’t sign up straight away without reading the small print. “Olga” has a 6 year old daughter, damnit.
