An Urgently Needed Break or Bad Beat Story?

Friday, May 01, 2015 Posted by Unknown , , , , , No comments
I have been to Las Vegas a few times already to cover the World Series Of Poker previously, of which 2014 with just over six weeks for PokerNews was probably the most memorable one. This year, the WSOP decided to do the live reporting in-house and many freelancers must have applied. Either way after about one month I eventually heard back that they "are afraid there was no spot for me" on the reporting team and photographers were already booked as well.

So, is this actually good or bad news?

The start of the year has been quite extraordinary in terms of events to cover, I have already done about a dozen of them and will be heading to Malta next week for the Mega Poker Series. Physically, I am probably in the worst shape for the past 12 months right now but that doesn't have any influence on my writing during the events. There is still a certain lack of consistency when it comes to taking pictures, even though the feedback is mostly positive.

At the events itself, "yours idiot" is the first of the staff to be at the venue each day and the last to leave in the evening / night / early morning hours. I love my kind of work most of the time and it helps to be a workaholic and have German blood in the veins with regards to the work ethics. Fortunately there is also a specific sample of familiar faces that keep the spirit alive. And if everything else fails, a quick chat with the person that always makes you smile gives the extra boost to survive another day without going crazy.

They say, when one door closes, another one will open ... or you get hit in the back when failing to exit quickly enough. I will definitely miss a lot of friends on the circuit who are going to be at Sin City, but this hiccup also represents an opportunity to focus on what or who deserves more attention as well.

Whether a miracle happens still or any other events pop up instead, c'est la vie.

Until then, may the flops, turns and rivers be with you.

P.S. That was my two cent towards the topic of daily bad beat stories.

Time for another Adventure on the Road

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Posted by Unknown , , , , , , No comments
In an attempt to increase the blogging ratio after a rather silent year 2014, I shall take a look at the upcoming next few weeks with five live event coverages until the end of February. The highlight of the trip surely the trip to Deauville for the European Poker Tour when it comes to following the progress of some of the biggest names on the circuit.

However, I very much enjoy the smaller festivals as well because you never know what surprise may be waiting. This special mixture along with the different playing style and atmosphere creates challenges out of the ordinary to keep the mind busy. Of course the travel to different destinations is yet another perk of the job, even though the net working hours may be quite the contrary.

Below is my upcoming schedule:

‎WPT National Cyprus‬ Jan 22-26

Mega Poker Series Vienna Jan 27-31

‪‎EPT Deauville‬ Feb 1-7

‪WPT National London‬ Feb 12-15

Tanger Poker Festival VII Feb 26-Mar 1

Which one am I looking forward to the most? I haven't been to Cyprus yet and can cross off another country on my must-visit list. The Mega Poker Series is my favorite child, as I started reporting from the very first event and also do the (social) media duties and website updates as well.

The European Poker Tour is not only one of the most well known festivals out there but the best-run event with the far-and-away best staff and dealers. Furthermore, I can practice my French and it always comes in handy to practice other languages in order not to get too rusty.

A quick glance at the National Event of the World Poker Tour revealed the accumulator structure, which I first reported on at the WSOP Asia-Pacific last October in Melbourne. The buy-in may be rather small, but the expected aggressive playing style shall make for some very interesting situations at the tables.

Last but not least is the Tanger Poker Festival, which will be my third trip to the north of Morocco. Everyone there is very friendly, they have an excellent free buffet at the casino and I can again take advantage of my French lessons from school.

So that's the first two months of the year covered, unless I suddenly squeeze in another event. Just kidding, obviously.

P.S. I shall take some pictures during the events and make for a proper trip report eventually.

Finishing off 2014 with Mega Poker Series, MCOP and EPT Prague

Saturday, November 15, 2014 Posted by Unknown , , , , , No comments
After Australia and the Caribbean, I get to work at another three events before the end of the year. Fortunately, the travel is far easier for all destinations but the bigger field sizes will definitely keep me busy:

Mega Poker Series Wiener Neustadt: November 18th - 23rd

Master Classics of Poker Amsterdam: November 25th to 29th

EPT Prague: December 9th to 17th

Once I am done in Austria early on the 24th, a shuttle picks me up and straight to the airport for an early morning flight. This way I arrive in time to take pictures at the MCOP Highroller Day 2 even though that's not part of my work responsibilities yet. But is there any better opportunity to once again get used to the light conditions?

Besides that, there is one further reasons for poker players why they shouldn't miss the event in the Dutch capital:

Exclusive invitation to the Heineken Players Party

Dear Pokerfriend,

From 21 - 29 November, the 23rd Master Classics of Poker tournament will take place at Holland Casino Amsterdam, the Main European Poker Event! The MCOP opening promises to be just as spectacular as it is every year, with the Celebrity Sit&Go and the exclusive Heineken Players Party.

Exclusive opening party
The exclusive Heineken Players party will take place on Friday evening, 21 November from 10.30 pm, following the official opening at 10 pm - and will be fully dedicated to our ambassador Jorryt van Hoof. After playing the final of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and finishing in third place, he’ll be back home in time for this party and the MCOP.

We are delighted to invite you to this special and exclusive Heineken Players Party with drinks and snacks at the Lido Club at Holland Casino Amsterdam.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Heineken Players Party on 21 November!

It has been quite a while

Tuesday, April 08, 2014 Posted by Unknown , , , No comments
I just noticed that my last blog has been published on December 31st 2013 and thus there was no entry yet for the current year, kind of shocking isn't it? At the start of this year I was quite unsure what may come because besides one live event nothing had been confirmed, so it was not quite an urge to share this on an online blog platform either.

Since then things have changed a little, after the Mega Poker Series Vienna I was in London for business followed by two surprise offers to work in Dublin at the European DeepStack as well as the Tanger Millionaire Maker in Morocco. Only back at home for two days meant exactly enough time to unpack, wash the clothes and then head straight to the next tournament with the European Poker Tour in Vienna until the end of March 2013. Fast forward about a week and I am sitting here to mentally prepare for the next two live events in a row ... .

From April 14th to 20th I will be working at the EPT Sanremo as a trial run for PokerNews and with some luck and my usual "working the ass off" efforts this may result in further opportunities in the future. On April 21st I will be flying back to Nürnberg and one day later I am already heading to Madrid for the start of season 3 of the Mega Poker Series in the Casino Gran Madrid. Even a third live event in a row may have been possible but ultimately didn't work out, it would have been nice but three weeks or reporting with barely any break is also quite tough. Then again this may be something that I gonna face in the summer. ;)

So what is the lesson of the first quarter of 2014 thus far? Somehow I managed to get down to 79 kilos and that is the lowest weight I have had for more than 4 years. The stomach is still not flat at all to keep me grumpy day in day out. I was biking twice and managed to put in more than 80 kilometers in total. And I have a lot to learn about taking pictures with my Canon 5D Mark III.

Let's see what surprises the upcoming months may have to offer ... and I am not referring to the lucky river suckouts at poker because I barely have time to play anyways. Guess I better end this post with a funny cat meme that fits to my current mood:

T'was the year 2012 (almost)

Sunday, December 30, 2012 Posted by Unknown , , No comments

Warning: This entry contains more than one paragraph and no pictures nor poems.

It was a year with many ups and downs, I didn't get to attend as many EPT's for work and had to skip the WSOP but saw a new record attendance at the same time in Madrid for our Deepstack Festival to make up for it. Online I barely played any poker and made about 1,200 USD, the profit went straight into new equipment for my part time job and hobby.

Many new and old friends showed up during the live events on the circuit and I also published several articles in print media with four of them being included in the upcoming Poker Blatt as of January 2nd. The most important improvement though was a more healthy lifestyle and regular visits to the gym as well as biking. Final result:

- 12.5 kilos lost
- no coffee for 8 months
- no alcohol for 8 1/2 months
- a by far better inner balance

Whereas I never had much alcohol, the coffee withdrawal was pretty insane in the first week but after that the urge to have a cup got smaller and smaller. I wanted to get rid of an addiction and now consider myself "clean", though I am still far away from where I want to be.

The goals for the upcoming year are not really "that" ambitious:
- staying healthy, regular workouts, losing a few more kilos
- getting better at writing and photography
- more hope and personal happiness
- more work and live events

End of January will already mark the first highlight once again and hopefully we will get more than 500 runners for the Mega Poker Series Vienna, an affordable Buy-In of 700+70€ as well as 77,000 Chips starting stack should make for plenty of room to play poker. Being in charge of the reporting, press, website updates and some interviews + pictures for fun should keep me busy ... and with some luck I am heading to Deauville for the EPT straight after that.

In February there is also a WPT National in Brussels as well as the GSOP live and WPT in Vienna whereas for March the EPT London will be calling. The live circuit schedule is loaded until the World Series and hopefully I can return to Sin City for work this summer. Besides that I only really need 1-2 more lenses for the new camera and lots of practice to reach a quality that somewhat satisfies me.

For Pokerspace I have had to wait a long time with the final decision not being in my hands but hopefully that will see severe changes in the upcoming months as well. In general we want to thrive more to quality and value, but this obviously needs the support of all members and less bickering on the tables and within the blog section. Whereas some feel overly attracted by drama, I can't see much sense in wasting my time with it and will just clean up without asking many questions.

More details will become available as soon as I have the permission to do so, in the meanwhile I hope to see a healthy competition in the Pokerspace Races and Indy Leagues for January because we worked hard to extend those deals. The monthly preview for the first month of 2013 will follow on Monday, until then feel free to check out the Calendar and pre-register for your favorite games.

Some things never change: new year, new madness

Thursday, February 02, 2012 Posted by Unknown , , , , , No comments
So January is done and dusted, the first month of the year and the work schedule has not changed much besides putting one part time job on hold. Well done ... guess it could have been worse. The first two tournament coverages are completed with the WPT Dublin (yay, Ireland done on the list of countries I always wanted to visit) and our own deepstack event at the Montesino Vienna saw a total of 390 players and a prize pool of 273,000 €. Not bad for the first try and the next one is already around the corner.

Along with the day to day work, I also got my schedule until the end of April and I guess, the airlines and the German rail will be happy to have a frequent traveler:

1) European Deepstack Poker Championship 2012

February 7th - 12th 2012 / Dublin, Ireland

2) EPT Copenhagen

February 20th - 25th 2012 / Denmark

3) EPT Madrid

March 12th - 17th 2012 / Spain

4) Mega Poker Series Nottingham

March 27th - April 1st 2012 / United Kingdom

5) Irish Open

April 6th - 9th 2012 / Dublin, Ireland

6) WPT Vienna

April 10th - 15th 2012 / Montesino, Austria

7) EPT Berlin

April 16th - 21st 2012 / Germany

Besides that I am currently preparing the tournament schedule for Nottingham and take care of the website content, at each of the tournaments I will do the blog coverage as well as take a lot of pictures ... which kinda unveils my newest addiction to the Canon 1100D. Without multi tasking, it would become increasingly difficult to get all those events and the regular work done but sleep is overrated anyways and I am looking forward to see the players, colleagues and friends again when the cards are back in the air.

Last but not least we have the "poker event task force", guess you have to be somewhat crazy to get the job done so might as well reveal the little helpers that will hopefully bring a smile on a few faces:

"Shuffle up and deal!" - Or should I rather say "Travel up and blog"? Game on ...

The work ride continues ... some things never change

Thursday, December 29, 2011 Posted by Unknown , , No comments
At first I thought my early x-mas prezzie with 18 days of live tournament coverage in a row early December would also mean a few weeks rest afterwards, but I should have known better :P Two days ago I had an email in my inbox, asking if I would be available for another coverage in January ... never say yes without knowing all details.

Unfortunately it is not the Bahamas for the PCA, but I guess Dublin in Ireland will do for now and I already booked my flights and hotel for the WPT Ireland from January 5th - 8th. But that is not all for the first month of 2012, Vienna is next on the list for the first stop of the Mega Poker Series, powered by Poker770. Thus, from January 18th to 22nd I can enjoy the Austrian food (especially Wiener Schnitzel) before heading to London a few days later for the London Affiliate Conference.

Right now I also have to finish up some articles for the Poker Shark Magazine and prepare the upcoming month for Pokerspace as well. But who needs sleep anyways, it is so overrated ... I am also looking forward to my new camera, finally decided to go one step further and ordered the Canon EOS 1100D and with some luck I should have it by Saturday, fingers crossed!

I haven't played much poker as of lately and if so, it was just for fun. Lost a few bucks here, won some there ... overall it's about break even and the new short handed Speed Poker is quite fun and fits to my lack of time.

Ah well, guess I better get back to work now and finish some tournament requests and the Calendar upload. Good game.

The Mega Poker Series - powered by Poker770

Thursday, December 22, 2011 Posted by Unknown , No comments
The deep stack format at live poker tournaments is becoming more and more popular and for almost all big games like the Main Event of the WSOP, EPT, and WPT you see a deep structure that favors the skilled players. There is lots of room to make moves without fear of busting on your first three-barrel bluff and there are lots of online qualifiers to give players an opportunity to participate in their first major live tournament.

The Mega Poker Series is taking the same approach with an enormous starting stack of 77,000 chips and blind levels that last 77 minutes, giving players the opportunity to test their skills at the tables. So far, the tour will consist of four events in 2012; the first two are set for Vienna and Nottingham.
Both locations offer excellent atmospheres and years of experience hosting live poker events. In fact, the Montesino Casino in Vienna and the Dusk Till Dawn Poker Club in Nottingham are well known and highly respected on the poker circuit.

Whether you’re a pro or just starting to play poker, with a moderate buy-in of €770 and several online qualifiers available, the Mega Poker Series is an excellent chance to get some experience at the poker tables and find your way from online to live poker. The Event Series is powered by Poker770, however players can participate in qualifiers throughout the iPoker Network. Every week, there are two satellites taking place where at least one package each worth €1,500 is guaranteed.

Furthermore, there is an opportunity to earn a VIP pass with additional benefits that only VIP players can take advantage of and VIP players will receive extra points for the overall leaderboard as well as a token for the next super satellite if they knock out a Poker770 Pro in a Main Event of the Mega Poker Series. Add an exclusive players party on top of all that and it pays to become a VIP for this tournament series.

The estimated prize pool is €200,000 and the first event will take place from January 18th to 22nd in the heart of Europe at the Montesino Casino in Vienna. The Austrian capital is easy to reach from various directions and offers plenty of sightseeing potential and excellent food. For now, the Mega Poker Series will host four events in 2012 and all participants will also score points for the overall leaderboard with a very competitive point structure.

If you enjoy poker as much as we do, you will love the amazing structure of the Mega Poker Series!
